Betty Willis serves as co-chair of Friends of A Way with Words.

Betty has served as the director of sales and marketing at Casa de Mañana, a La Jolla based retirement community, since 2013.  She has previously held roles as CEO and managing member at Park Manor Suites, and has also worked with the Crest International Corporation.

Constance Carroll, Ph.D., co-chair


San Diego Community College District

Dr. Constance Carroll is the founding member and co-chair of Friends of A Way with Words.

Dr. Carroll has served as chancellor of the San Diego Community College District, the sixth largest community college system in the country, since 2004. Prior to this role, she has held presidencies at San Diego Mesa College, Saddleback College, and Indian Valley Colleges, teaching courses in the classics and humanities at all three institutions. Dr. Carroll has received numerous national and regional awards and held leadership positions with organizations and foundations around the country.

Jack Beresford

Director of communications and public relations

San Diego Community College District

Jack Beresford is an experienced communications and public relations professional.

Jack has served as the director of communications and public relations at the San Diego Community College District since 2013. Previously, he served as the chief communications officer at San Diego State University and as the director of public affairs at the Gable Group of San Diego. Jack also serves as the District VII Board and Awards chair for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Ignacio De La Torre

Regional VP for external affairs


Ignacio De La Torre is a business leader with nearly 30 years of telecommunications experience.

Ignacio currently serves as the AT&T regional vice president for external affairs with supervision over San Diego and Imperial Counties. He has been involved in a variety of community strengthening projects and currently serves on the San Diego Community College District Corporate Council. Through his work with AT&T, he has led philanthropic involvement with numerous nonprofit and community improvement organizations.

Joan Houston Hall, Ph.D.

Dictionary of American Regional English

Joan Houston Hall is a lifelong teacher and scholar of the English language.

Joan is chief editor of the Dictionary of American Regional English, a multi-volume work demonstrating variations of language usage across the United States. She has previously worked as a lecturer in English departments at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the College of Idaho.

Margaret Lamb

Executive assistant to the chancellor

San Diego Community College District

Margaret Lamb is an experienced administrator and higher education professional.

Margaret has worked with the San Diego Community College District since 2003 and currently serves as the executive assistant to the chancellor.

Kenneth Lounsbery, J.D.


Lounsbery Ferguson Altona & Peak

Kenneth Lounsbery is an accomplished lawyer with experience throughout the San Diego area.

Kenneth is a partner at Lounsbery Ferguson Altona & Peak, a law firm specializing in transactional and litigation services for public and private clients. He has previously worked with Higgs Fletcher & Mack, Lusardi Construction and the San Diego City Attorney’s Office.

Cindy Miles, Ph.D.


Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District

Dr. Cindy Miles is an accomplished higher education leader.

Dr. Miles serves as chancellor at Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District in El Cajon, California and has held this role since 2009. Previously, she was the founding president of the Hialeah Campus at Miami Dade College and the vice president/chief operating officer of the League for Innovation in the Community College. Dr. Miles has also held roles as faculty member, researcher, grants developer, program director, and senior administrator at community colleges in Texas and Colorado. Prior to education she spent over a decade in the allied health field as a medical technologist. Dr. Miles is also active in numerous local and national organizations.

Betty Peabody

Community Volunteer

Friends of Balboa Park

Betty Peabody is a lifelong community volunteer in the San Diego area.

Betty is widely recognized for her work as founder and chair of Friends of Balboa Park, a nonprofit organization striving to improve the iconic park for the next generation. She has been involved with various volunteer projects at the park for fifty years, and starting with the Museum of Man before eventually founding Friends of Balboa Park. Betty has been recognized for her contributions as a community volunteer by various state and local organizations.

Liz Anne Potamianos

Liz Anne Potamianos is a community leader and supporter of philanthropy and the arts.

Liz Anne is a contemporary art collector and board member of the iconic Sonnabend Collection Foundation. She has worked with and supported numerous community organizations and philanthropic initiatives, primarily focused on education, humanities, and the arts.

Rana Sampson, J.D.

VP and community relations ambassador

Union Bank

Rana Sampson is an experienced professional in community relations and public safety.

Rana currently serves as the vice president and community relations ambassador at Union Bank. She has previously served as the director of public safety for USD, a law enforcement consultant, a White House fellow, National Institute of Justice fellow, senior researcher and trainer at the Police Executive Research Forum, and in various roles with the New York City Police Department. She is also the co-author of Tackling Crime and Other Public-Safety Problems.

Bonnie Scott, Ph.D.

Bonnie Scott is a writer, teacher, and scholar in the fields of English and Women’s Studies.

Bonnie is professor emerita of Women’s Studies at San Diego State University and professor emerita of English at the University of Delaware. She is the author of books on James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and other topics related to her scholarly work.
